One of the key tools in a cybersecurity arsenal are referred to as Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). They are used not only in ground-based networks, data centers, and other such environments but are now coming to be part of future aircraft due to the increase in communications in-flight.

Before we delve into how this is unfolding, it helps to have some understanding of what exactly an IDS is and what it does.

Wikipedia provides us with a good definition, “An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a device or software application that monitors a network or systems for malicious activity or…

Many articles have been published on the topic of hackers accessing airlines, various travel, and even general aviation operators. This column has highlighted many cybersecurity issues and developments relating to avionics, flight, and MRO operations. Still, this time the topic will be slightly different, namely, hackers targeting airline and operators’ reservations, booking, or ticketing systems.

Various airlines have experienced cyber-attacks upon their systems, which contain passenger name records (PNR) or related information, and it appears that a number of these attacks may be state-sponsored. This is quite different from the usual targeting of credit cards or stealing identities sold on…

The global travel industry may have found a way to jump-start international travel again through the use of digital “health pass or passports.” This credential will eventually contain a person’s proof of vaccination, replacing today’s proof of a negative COVID-19 test, as many nations now require in order to enter or to quarantine for 14 days once arriving. This “health pass” will be linked to online databases, which border control authorities will be able to access to authenticate the validity of a travelers vaccination status.

The coming revolution in aviation propulsion has mainly focused on electrical aircraft, even though battery technologies have not quite evolved to be practical quite yet for most planes.

There are several smaller aircraft, UAV/air taxis, and VTOL aircraft, which are being developed to work off of batteries for use in electric or hybrid-electric implementations. While electric aircraft powered by batteries may one day enter commercial service, it will take further innovation to develop high-capacity power storage capabilities to provide enough power to do so. With all of the investment around the world in dozens of companies and research labs, that…

Let’s start with addressing the elephant in the room; this is NOT an article that debates climate change. The simple fact is that aviation is one of the industries which affects the climate, so the world needs to identify methods by which to minimize emissions from aircraft and associated ground operations. Aviation as an industry needs to find ways to reduce emissions in the short-term, as well as move forward with more significant solutions over the long term.

The Global Argument to Reduce Aviation Emissions

In the past decade, the aviation industry has begun addressing concerns regarding the need to…

Much information and opinions have been coming out as of late on this topic. While much of it sounds hopeful and optimistic, the reality is that it just may actually be when taking the entire flying experience.

At the time of writing this article, no cure or vaccine has emerged yet for COVID-19, but there is one that has shown good potential and is months away from reaching public distribution. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the U.S., and its counterparts such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and urging caution when traveling by land, air…

While it is true that the first “space race” occurred back in the Cold War, with the USA and the Soviet Union each trying to outdo each other in reaching milestones in space, the current space conflict will have much more drama. This time around it is for substantial sums of money instead of national pride.

This corporate warfare between sets of deep-pocketed investors trying to outspend one another, and against competing/teaming with and against existing satellite operators is just beginning to take shape. …

Traveling by air has never been easier, and in general, so economical as well. You can literally get to the most populated parts of the world with one or airline two connections. You can also book travel much easier, simply by using a smartphone. This same device now allows you to stay connected to family, friends, and work (argh) during these travels and as long as a Wi-Fi connection is available, there is no need for expensive cellular service plans when out of the country.

But all of this comes at a price since there are criminals waiting to pounce…

With air travel continuing to grow globally, and the number of passengers and flights increasing each year, the need to handle medical emergencies while in the air is also intensified. According to industry reports, it is estimated that commercial airlines will carry just over 4.3 billion passengers on scheduled flights in 2018, and 4.5B+ in 2019. This trend is exasperated due to the popularity of low-cost airlines, and their expansion into long-haul flights, which has allowed a higher percentage of the population to travel more economically. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine estimates that one (1)…

Amazon has been the poster child for the eCommerce world for some time now, and it continues to enter new markets and come to dominate many of them over time. It all started with selling books (remember that?), and now it has transitioned to pretty much anything and everything possible that can be easily shipped. Amazon has also moved into selling Prime membership subscriptions, publishing, music, videos, online payments, cloud storage, and other cutting edge endeavors.

While these newer areas may eventually overtake its bread and butter online retail store, for now, eCommerce is still the mainstay. But the challenge…
